Description

As close to an original '58 as you can get.

The 1959 Model is generally seen as the peak of the evolution of the Les Paul. In 1959 the neck shape of the Les Paul became a little slimmer and wider, fatter jumbo frets, which facilitated more dramatic bends were added. In addition to that it seems, that the workers took more care in the selection of the wood for the maple tops, which sometimes had a really spectacular figure. The real force of these changes was not felt until the mid 1960s, when rock and blues players like Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield and Peter Green began to discover the fat, warm voice of the ???59 Standard. This moment in history marked the beginning of the idealization of the ???59 Les Paul as the Holy Grail of guitars in the minds of professionals, collectors and weekend warriors.

VOS stands for Vintage Original Spec. The finishing process on VOS models has been customised to reflect the way Gibson finished Les Paul guitars back in the '50s. They receive a thinner nitro-cellulose lacquer finish which is applied, sanded, and buffed by hand; in other words, more care is put into the finishing process. This extra care is intended to make VOS guitars look like gently aged and well-cared-for vintage guitars. It also helps the guitars 'breathe' better and therefore to resonate and sustain more freely, making them much better instruments.

Gibson Custom Shop
The Gibson Custom Shop was founded in 1993 with only five employees. Initially the purpose was to take care of individual orders, the endorser and special models.
The Custom Shop's first spectacular action was the revision of the '59 and '60 Les Paul Flametop Reissues. A lot of changes were to be made, to make the reissue as authentic and close to the old originals as possible.
Today around 80 experts are working at the Custom Shop, who cover all areas ranging from "one-off" instruments to limited runs and R&D.

Gibson

The home of Gibson electric guitars today is "Gibson USA," built in 1974 in Nashville specifically for the production of Gibson's Les Paul guitars. Although the entire guitar industry went through a slump in the late '70s, the spirit of innovation remained strong at Gibson. In response to a growing demand for vintage stylings, Gibson tapped its rich history and reissued the dot-neck version of the ES-335 in 1981 and the flametop sunburst Les Paul in 1982. At the same time, two legendary guitarists joined Gibson- B.B. King in 1980 with the Lucille model and Chet Atkins in 1982 with his new concept of a solidbody acoustic guitar.

Gibson world headquarters moved to Nashville in 1984 with the closing of the Kalamazoo plant. The financially troubled company was rescued in January 1986 by Henry Juszkiewicz and David Berryman, and the new owners quickly restored Gibson's reputation for quality as well as its profitability.

Today's Gibson electric guitars represent the history as well as the future of the electric guitar. The models whose designs have become classics-the ES-175, ES-335, Flying V, Explorer, Firebird, SGs and Les Pauls-are a testament to Gibson's wide appeal, spanning more than four decades of music styles. Gibson's close relationship with musicians is manifest in endorsement models from King, Atkins and jazz greats Howard Roberts and Herb Ellis, plus new Les Pauls made to the personal specifications of rock stars Jimmy Page and Joe Perry. In 1994, Gibson's Centennial year, the new Nighthawk model won an industry award for design, setting the stage for a second hundred years of Gibson quality and innovation.
